A busy backlog can conceal a lack of direction. Customer requests, operational problems and technical maintenance all compete for attention, while different stakeholders may have different ideas of success. Product management gives those decisions a structure your team can use.

We help organisations launching new software, extending a mature product or taking over an inherited system. The engagement can provide product ownership alongside your delivery team or help an existing product lead work through a defined planning problem.

Make priorities explicit and reviewable

We start with the product’s purpose, the people it serves and the decisions currently slowing progress. Existing research, support enquiries, analytics and team knowledge inform the work. Where evidence is missing, we identify what needs investigating rather than treating every request as an established requirement.

The scope can include a product roadmap, a prioritised backlog, user stories and acceptance criteria. We make dependencies and trade-offs visible so that stakeholders understand why an item is being brought forward or deferred.

During delivery, we keep communication focused on working software, feedback and decisions. A regular review gives you a chance to adjust priorities as the team learns. We also help plan release readiness and the operational changes needed for a feature to be useful after it is shipped.

Product decisions in a public service

On the King’s Awards for Enterprise application service, we worked closely with the client through regular iteration meetings. User research and six rounds of usability testing informed the design, while collaborative prioritisation helped the team prepare for the next application round.

The work required product decisions about content and user understanding as well as software features. Research into eligibility, for example, informed the introduction of eligibility checkers.

Who remains accountable for the product?

We agree decision-making responsibilities before starting. You may retain a product owner internally, or ask us to take on an agreed product role. Either way, priorities and approval responsibilities stay visible; a roadmap should not become a substitute for conversations with the people accountable for it.

Is this the same as a fractional CTO?

Product management concentrates on what to deliver, for whom and in what order. A fractional CTO provides senior technical direction and advice. If you need a team to carry out the work as well, a fractional development team can combine product management with design and engineering.
